End grain cups

End grain cups are carved by splitting a section of wood, drilling a hole and then carving outwards to the rim. as the end of the grain is present at the base of the cup it needs to be properly sealed for use. My preferred methos is to seal the outside with a blend of hempseed oil and beeswax that is melted to seal the grain. The inside is left untouched and so I recommend either using these cups for coffee or spirits. Coffee will deposit oils and grounds into the cup giving it a rich patina and further seal the inside and the alcohol level in spirits will not cause mould if the liquid is allowed to sit in the base of the cup for an extended period of time.
